The thing about democracy is not that you get to vote. You get to vote in Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Florida for all the good it does you as a voter. And really your one vote does not count. It doesn’t make any difference. Block votes count. Become a block perhaps.
The key to democracy is that, when done correctly it makes the leaders of the country - are accountable to something other than themselves. And it allows their actions to be transparent.
When you have a leader with no accountability – you have a dictatorship – or a King.
Here in N.America the things that run the country – the corporations, who employ the politicians are accountable to no-one. Not a voter – and not a shareholder. Shareholders are ignored – that’s what corporations have accountants for (See Enron etc).
And neither the corporation nor the politician they employ a have any desire for transparency. After all there is a war on isn’t there? What is it right now? – war on…truth? Honesty – O no I remember TERROR. (So shouldn’t we be at war with our politicians?– they are by definition, terrorists – well in the Bush administration anyway). Because they say -If we weren’t at war with something – drugs, crime, the truth – we could be honest with you – honest we could but harsh times require Homeland Security and Halliburton and CSIS and you know, not you.
The reason there is secrecy in a leader is always, always because someone is cheating.
So vote or don’t vote we do not have in N.America a fully functioning democracy.
And what are we at war with in Canada that requires our government to hide? O yes we are at war with Afghanistan. Of course we are.
