Breakfast – Dont Rush that Meal-Make Time

People who don’t eat breakfast aren’t doing their body any favors. The word breakfast originates sometime in the 1400’s and literally refers to ending a sleep-enforced separation from food. It is widely accepted, though often debated, that breakfast is the most important meal in the day. It should give you 1/3 of the day’s nutrients and include lowfat dairy products, whole grains, fruit and protein. People who skip breakfast may experience low blood sugar and decreased energy mid-morning. They may also experience some problems solving problems or thinking clearly. If you skip breakfast because you don’t have time to eat, rethink your priorities and give yourself an extra 5-10 minutes to include this important meal in your day whether you are at home or away. Try to include some of the following items as part of your breakfast choices:

High fiber whole grain cereal;
1% or nonfat milk or soymilk;
Fresh fruit lowfat yogurt;
Banana;
High fiber whole grain bread with almond butter;
Eggs (poached, scrambled or fried – watch the butter);
Whole grain waffle;
Breakfast burrito (with lite sour cream and reduced fat cheese);
Protein bar;
Pancakes (light on the butter with no sugar syrup or fresh fruit).

This list is far from complete, but provides a few ideas to get you started on your way to including breakfast in your life each and every day.
